Christians and Facebook

Mary Blog

Since the terrible events in Paris I have been reading all the various political posts and I have been saddened. I have been trying for days to figure out what and how to say something that has been weighing on my heart for a while now.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of Christians and social media.  And I have some questions for Christians on Facebook.

Do you as a Christian believe that our primary job here on earth is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be a positive witness for him to the rest of the world so that they will be drawn to Him and God will be given the glory?

If you don’t believe this, then this article may not really apply to you. Your answer would mean my view of my purpose as a Christian and yours are different. You are more than welcome to read on, but this question wouldn’t be directed at you.

But if you are a Christian who does believe that is our main purpose here on earth, I have a second question:

Do you think posting your political views on a social media site are going to further the Kingdom of God? Or is it possible you might be alienating people and causing them to have a less than positive view of Christ?

I was going to post other questions like: Do you think posting your political views on Facebook is really effective or really going to change anyone’s mind? Or do you think that because you have a limited profile and only ‘ friends’ can see what you post and therefore they are likely to have the same views as you? Or do you post intentionally to affect those who don’t have the same political views you do? And if so, do you truly believe that is what God would want you to do?

I’m not trying to say that as a Christian we can’t be involved in politics or have a view, just asking whether or not social media like Facebook is the best place for it.  There is always the message option to discuss personal views, or you can start a blog or even better would be meeting in person.

But I decided these were the more direct, simple and to the point questions:
Do you think posting your political views on a social media site is going to further the Kingdom of God? Or is it possible you might be alienating people and causing them to have a less than positive view of Christ?

Whatever your answer,  a good scripture to read and reflect on would be Ephesians 4, especially verses Eph4: 1-3 and verse Eph 4:15.
