The foundation of our ethics ? / De basis voor onze ethiek ?

This will become my first bi-lingual post, based on a question posed by a very dear friend of mine. “Shouldn’t our ethics be based on our humanity of itself”. Let’s investigate.

Dit is mijn eerste tweetalige blog entry, gebaseerd op een vraag van een goede vriend. “Moet onze ethiek niet gegrond zijn in onze menselijkheid zelf”. Laat ons even verder onderzoeken.

My friend and I have known each other since kindergarten and I fondly remember our youth together. We did lose touch for quite a while and grew apart, especially since my move to the United States 13 years ago. But thanks to the miracles of modern technology and facebook, we somehow got back in touch. Based on my previous postings, he asked the following question:

“My main question is however, what would happen if tomorrow we had undeniable proof (and I realize this is an impossible presupposition) that God does not exist ? If the proof were undeniable, would we act differently ? And if so, why and what was our original ethic worth in the first place? One can of course reverse the question: What if God tomorrow did come and speak to us personally (which is theoretically possible)? Would we then all of a sudden act differently and what would our improved ethic be worth? “Shouldn’t our ethics be grounded in our humanity by itself ?” is probably the core of the question. – Translation mine. Sorry for the mistakes 😉

My answer in a nutshell: It will greatly depend on what we then accept as the foundation for out ethics. “Grounded in humanity”. But which perspective of humanity? Western, which like it or not is historically based on Christian values. Or Middle Eastern, African, Eastern? If there is no God, then who sets the standard of what human ethics are or should be? Or based on “our worth”? But what decides our worth? Our economic contributions? Scientific? Or perhaps we should do what is right for “future generations”. But we’re already in trouble as far as that is concerned. Depending on the studies, earth can support anywhere from 4 billion, at the American-European prosperity level, to 8 billion at the Latin America-North Africa prosperity level. So what level should it be and how do we then control those numbers for our future generations? Euthanasia? Is that ethical?

My argument is that only the Christian faith adheres inherent value to all human beings in equal measure. Which is not saying all Christians live up to that measure. But it is the only solid foundation to build an ethical world on. It is the only foundation that claims that “No one is righteous, no, not one” (Rom 3:10) and that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). And that the only reason why we have any chance is because of the grace of God.

So where do you stand? What is, or rather should be, the foundation of our ethics?

Mijn vriend en ik kennen elkaar al sinds de kleuterschool en ik heb vele goede herinneringen aan onze jeugd. We hebben, zoals zo velen, over de jaren contact verloren. maar dank zij de mirakels van de moderne technologie en facebook, zijn we terug met elkaar in contact geraakt. Gebaseerd op sommige van mijn vorige blog entries, stelde hij mij de volgende vraag:

Mijn voornaamste vraag is echter wat als morgen ontegensprekelijk zou bewezen worden (ik weet wel dat dit een onmogelijke aanname is) dat God niet bestaat? Het bewijs zou ontegensprekelijk zijn, zouden we dan plots anders handelen? En zo ja waarom en wat was onze vroegere ethiek dan waard? Je kunt de vraag natuurlijk ook omkeren wat als God ons morgen komt toespreken (dit is theoretisch natuurlijk wel mogelijk), zouden we dan plots beter handelen en wat zou onze verbeterde ethiek dan waard zijn? Moet onze ethiek niet gegrond zijn in onze menselijkheid zelf is waarschijnlijk de kern van mijn vraag

In een notedop, het antwoord hangt ervan af wat we dan als ethiek aanvaarden. “Gegrond in onze menselijkheid”. Maar de vraag blijft welk perspectief op menselijkheid ? Westers, hetwelk gebaseerd is op Christelijke waarden. Of het perspectief van het Midden Oosten, of Afrikaans of Oosters ? Als er geen God is, wie zet dan de standaard voor wat menselijke ethiek hoort te zijn ? Of misschien gebaseerd op onze “intrinsieke waarde”? Maar wat bepaald deze waarde? Onze economische contributie? Of wetenschappelijke? Of misschien moeten we doen wat juist is voor “toekomstige generaties”? Maar wat dat betreft zitten we al in gevaarlijke wateren. Afhangende van de vershillende studies, kan onze aarde rond de 4 miljard mensen onderhouden aan het huidige Amerikaans-Europees welvaartspeil. Misschien 8 miljard aan het niveau van Latijns Amerika of Noord Afrika. Welk welvaartspeil is dan het juiste? En hoe controleren we dan de wereld bevolking om dat peil aan te houden? Euthanasie? Is dat ethisch?

Mijn argument is dat alleen het Christelijk geloof aan elke individu intrinsieke waarde toekent. Wat niet hetzelfde is dan dat alle Christenen dat effectief uitleven. Maar het blijft de enige fundering voor een ethische wereld. Het is de enige fundering die accepteert dat “Er is geen mens rechtvaardig, zelfs niet één” (Rom 3:10) en dat “Iedereen heeft gezondigd en ontbeert de nabijheid van God” (Rom 3:23). De enige reden dat we een kans hebben is bij de Genade Gods.

Wat is Uw basis voor uw ethiek? Wat is, of beter gezegd wat zou, de basis voor uw ethiek moeten zijn?
