My Problem with Easter

If the message of Easter is true, if the message is one that our Lord is alive and well, here and now, and is with us each and every day, there is no hiding. One cannot go on with his or her daily life as if nothing happened and commemorate this event one day a week. This is a message that should impact my life fundamentally. It should impact my life to be one of tremendous joy, comfort, trust, hope and love. And it is a message that should not only inspire but instill in me a desire to share, comfort, care for, love and uplift those around me. Continue reading

Going vs Belonging

Don’t just go to Church. I’m serious. I’m telling you to not just go to church. I’m asking you if you belong in Church.

We all go places. We go visit others, we go to events, concerts or dinners. But going somewhere doesn’t mean you belong to the group you’re going to. As Christians shouldn’t “go” to Church. But we do “belong” in Church. So what is the difference between going and belonging ? Continue reading

A little bit of prayer goes a long way

Do you struggle with your daily prayers ? Do you have a hard time keeping track ? Does your mind wonder while having your first cup of coffee ? So do I. Until I by accident came up with a little mnemonic acronym. Perhaps this can help you too. Continue reading

Have we lost our flavor ?

Salt. The wonderful, almost mystical item. Added in moderation, it enhances the flavor of the food it is added to. Without things, according to those on a salt-free diet, things taste bland. Add too much, things become inedible. Used rightly, it can preserve things. As Christians, we are being called to be the salt of the earth. Enhance the things around us, preserve the things around us. And not be so invasive that we make things distasteful. But are we really doing that ? Am I really doing that ? And if we are, how does it show? Continue reading

Jesus was just a good teacher… and other utter rubbish

Was Jesus just a good teacher or was there more ? Many articles already exist using Christs “I am God” statements as defense. This is a bit of a different approach, using his life and other teachings as arguments. Continue reading

The foundation of our ethics ? / De basis voor onze ethiek ?

“Shouldn’t our ethics be based on our humanity of itself”.
“Moet onze ethiek niet gegrond zijn in onze menselijkheid zelf”. Continue reading

Heaven & Hell part I: Are we obsessed by hell ?

Rob Bell’s book “Love Wins”, published in March, generated the latest flurry of books, blog entries, sermons and podcasts about heaven, hell and the afterlife. This prompted me to dive into this subject and see what we can glean from the current writings of theological scholars and pastors out there and compare that with Scripture and our Christian traditions. And above all, how should we respond, here and now, with what we know about heaven or hell. Continue reading

Are there good reasons to leave a Church ?

As events throw a Church body into upheaval, people inevitably start leaving the congregation. No different with our Church body which, as I posted here, is going through some difficult transitions right now. Considering I had some recent conversations with several brothers that are either contemplating leaving or have already made the, undoubtedly difficult, decision to leave, I started to think about what the Scriptures may have to say about leaving a church fellowship. Continue reading

Our messy Church

As events happen in a Church body, people will respond differently. That is normal since we are all different. However as people who call ourselves Christian, are there more appropriate ways to respond than others ? Does the Scripture teach us anything on how we should respond ? These are my musings I wrote down several weeks ago as quite significant events happened at our Church. After much prayer, I finally decided to post this. Perhaps it helps some people work through the grieving and coping process Continue reading
