Ok, I realize this is a different post than usual. But with the sad passing of Steve Jobs today, I decided to open this up as a collection of favorite Apple or Mac moments.

SMU Debate review. Can we trust the text of the New Testament

Last Saturday I was one of the lucky. Seated amongst a 1,600 member audience, I was able to attend the SMU debate on the reliability of the New Testament between Dr. Bart Ehrman and Dr. Dan Wallace. With a title like “Can we trust the text of the New Testament”, I was looking forward to a spirited debate between two esteemed and reputable scholars in the field.

A little bit of prayer goes a long way

Image Copyright: Warner Bros. - Looney TunesDo you struggle with your daily prayers ? Do you have a hard time keeping track ? Does your mind wonder while having your first cup of coffee ? So do I. Until I by accident came up with a little mnemonic acronym. Perhaps this can help you too.

Have we lost our flavor ?

Salt. The wonderful, almost mystical item. Added in moderation, it enhances the flavor of the food it is added to. Without things, according to those on a salt-free diet, things taste bland. Add too much, things become inedible. Used rightly, it can preserve things. As Christians, we are being called to be the salt of the earth. Enhance the things around us, preserve the things around us. And not be so invasive that we make things distasteful. But are we really doing that ? Am I really doing that ? And if we are, how does it show?

Jesus was just a good teacher… and other utter rubbish

Another post in the “Other Utter Rubbish” category. And this is one that has been talked about so much already, that I am astonished that people still use that line. So what’s up with that ? And I also know there has already been written much on this subject. So why add in my own two pennies ?

Heaven & Hell Part IV (final): So what ?

In the final part of this series, I’m trying to explore what the notion of heaven and hell should imply for our daily lives. Should this notion of heaven or hellhave any impact on how we live or what we do? In short the answer is “Of course”. But then the immediate follow-up question is “How?” Not if it should impact our life, but how should it impact our life. Let’s have a look.

The foundation of our ethics ? / De basis voor onze ethiek ?

This will become my first bi-lingual post, based on a question posed by a very dear friend of mine. “Shouldn’t our ethics be based on our humanity of itself”. Let’s investigate.

Dit is mijn eerste tweetalige blog entry, gebaseerd op een vraag van een goede vriend. “Moet onze ethiek niet gegrond zijn in onze menselijkheid zelf”. Laat ons even verder onderzoeken.

Heaven & Hell Part III: Who’s going where ?

Who's going where ?

In the third part of this series, I’m looking at the question we’re all dying to answer: “Who’s going where?”. We all would love to point out a specific group and say “They are going to hell!”. And then pat ourselves on the shoulder “But we, we’re going to heaven!”. In the first article I asked whether we are obsessed by hell, but honestly, the question should read “Are we obsessed by who’s going to hell?”. So let’s go and see if I can help you think about that question.

Heaven & Hell Part II: What do they look like ?

In the second part of this little series about heaven and hell, let’s have a look at what we are being told they look like. What should we think of hell? Are there lakes of fire? Are there worms? Desolation? Darkness and gnashing of teeth? Or is it a realm where self-centeredness and separation from God rule? And is it eternal? Or temporal? And what about heaven? Clouds and playing a musical instrument of your choice? Will we have bodies? Or just spirits? Let’s dive in. Continue reading

Heaven & Hell part I: Are we obsessed by hell ?

The publication of Rob Bell’s “Love Wins” several months ago, has thrown a spark in the debate about hell, heaven and the afterlife like something we haven’t seen in quite a while. Granted, I am quite late in posting this, since Rob’s controversial video announcing the book was posted last February. So call me late to the party 😉
On the other hand, I wanted to take the time to let the dust settle. Mere minutes after the video hit the internet, before the book was even published, many evangelical scholars criticized Bell for becoming a universalist. Piper’s now infamous tweet “Farewell Bell” was probably the cherry on the cake in a whirlwind of reactions.
In Dutch there’s a proverb that quite accurately describes this flurry of activity and it goes something like this: “He threw the stick in the duck pond“. Now, if you’ve ever seen a pond full of ducks, and imagine someone throwing a stick in the midst of them, you can get the idea of what happens. And that’s exactly what happened when Rob Bell published his video. Twitter blew up, blog postings abounded and many pastors have published, or re-published, sermons and podcasts about hell. So are we obsessed by hell ? And if so, should we be ? And furthermore, what should we understand about heaven, hell and the afterlife ? Continue reading
